What is General Anesthesia?

General anesthesia is an umbrella term for medically induced unconsciousness and suppression of the body’s response to pain. In layman’s terms, general anesthesia puts a patient into a deep sleep to allow for surgeons to safely conduct certain procedures.

Because of its suppressive capabilities, it’s important that general anesthesia only be administered by a trained, board-certified anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist under the supervision of a board-certified surgeon. This is why it’s so important to choose a reputable cosmetic surgery center like Miami Plastic Surgery.

With Miami Plastic Surgery, you are always in good hands. We provide one-to-one anesthesiologist care from the moment you enter our clinic. Our team of anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists have years of experience and are highly skilled in providing a safe, comfortable surgical experience. What to Expect Under General Anesthesia

For patients with no previous surgical experience, the prospect of general anesthesia can be daunting. There are fears of waking up mid-procedure or other complications that can make you hesitant to get the cosmetic procedure you’ve always wanted.

Despite what you may see in movies or the media, most people don’t experience any serious issues under general anesthesia. Regaining awareness while under general anesthesia is very rare and your anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist goes to great lengths to ensure you remain safely under for the entirety of the procedure. By continuously monitoring your brain waves and other vitals, we can make real-time adjustments as needed to maintain sedation and prevent any other complications.

Once the procedure is complete, the medications used for general anesthesia typically take 10 to 20 minutes to leave the system, at which point you will awaken and begin your recovery. Some patients may take up to 60 minutes to awaken after general anesthesia, a condition called delayed emergence. Miami Plastic Surgery anesthesia specialists monitor you throughout the entire procedure and post-op process to ensure your comfort and safety.

Going under general anesthesia is nothing to fear. If you’re ready to get the body you’ve always wanted, schedule your consultation with Miami Plastic Surgery today.
