What Is A Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is an acne treatment procedure that results in lighter and clearer skin. So, often chemical peels for acne scars are the preferred treatment. This is achieved by applying a chemical peel to the skin which induces a controlled injury. This then causes the skin to heal itself and new tissue is subsequently produced. The dead layer of the skin peels off, resulting in a new, scar-free layer of fresh skin.

What Are Chemical Peels Used To Treat?

A chemical peel is helpful for wrinkles, light acne scarring, and irregular pigmentation such as freckles and age spots. Pre-cancerous conditions such as keratoses (thick, rough, reddish growths) also respond well to this procedure.

What Causes Acne?

Acne is caused by a variety of offending factors. Whether one is seeking adult acne treatment, teenage acne treatment or acne treatment for men or women, it is important to know what may have caused the acne in the first instance. Here are a few possible causes:

  • Hormones
Hormone fluctuation is one of the leading causes of acne breakouts. Specifically, the male hormones (androgens) are what cause the painful acne in the face and neck.
  • Stress
Stress in your body causes your adrenal gland to pump out cortisol to help your body deal with the stressful circumstances. Unfortunately, it also causes a release of androgens which cause acne breakouts.
  • Pollution
Air pollution in a city is essentially a bath of dirt and damaging chemicals for your face. This obviously aggravates the skin and causes acne.
  • Diet
It is common wisdom that what you eat affects your body. In this instance, the science backs it up. Eating sugar causes your insulin levels to rise, which gets accompanied by a rise in androgens. In addition, iodine build-up can cause acne breakouts. Iodine is found in most seafood and can cause your acne to flare if and when you eat enough of it.

What Are The Different Types Of Chemical Peels?

There are several types of chemical peels:

  • Light peels to remove superficial wrinkles
  • Medium peels
  • Deep peels for more severe conditions.

How Does A Chemical Peel Treatment Work?

After thoroughly cleansing the skin, a small applicator is used to apply the chemical solution to an area of the face. The excess solution is then removed and the procedure is repeated on other areas.

How Many Chemical Peel Treatments Will I Need?

The amount of improvement varies and depends upon the initial condition of the patient’s skin.
