Are you looking for an effective way to reduce the signs of aging? At Miami Plastic Surgery®, we are happy to help you look and feel rejuvenated by offering deep plane facelifts and other facial plastic surgery.
What Is a Deep Plane Facelift?
Deep plane facelift surgery is similar to an SMAS facelift. It involves repositioning the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS), which is the muscles and deep tissue beneath the skin. A facial plastic surgeon works on a tissue plane, tightening it so the jawline, neck, and cheeks are significantly lifted for natural-looking results. The surgeon also lifts the facial fat beneath to enhance the volume and contour of your face.
This facelift procedure differs from a traditional facelift in that it targets the tissue beneath, not just the skin.
Who Is an Ideal Candidate?
Older men and women who show signs of aging and want a more youthful appearance long-term are ideal candidates for deep-plane facelifts. Their skin displays sagging and jowls, and volume loss is also evident.
They are typically older than 50, have fair skin elasticity, and are healthy. Ideal candidates should preferably not have chronic illnesses that could slow the healing process. These individuals should have realistic expectations about the procedure and outcomes. While it changes their appearance for an improved, younger look, it does not stop the aging process.
The Deep Plane Facelift Procedure
The patient will consult a board-certified surgeon to discuss their medical history, goals, and expectations. The surgeon will reassure the patient with a detailed explanation of the surgery steps, ensuring they’re physically and mentally prepared.
The deep plane facelift procedure lasts a few hours. Before starting, the facial plastic surgeon administers general anesthesia before making an incision along the patient’s hairline and ears. The position of the incision helps conceal the scars as they heal.
The next step involves cutting through to reach the SMAS plane, which sets this facelift apart from the traditional method. During this, the SMAS tissue and facial fat are vertically lifted and shifted, tightening the face without pulling the skin excessively.
The facial plastic surgeon may manipulate the fat pads to add volume to the cheeks and jawline for a smooth and youthful contour. The last steps involve redraping the skin over the lifted and restructured SMAS tissue and other deeper structures, trimming excess skin, and closing the incisions with staples or sutures before wrapping the face with dressing to facilitate healing.
Results, Recovery, and Aftercare
The healing process takes a few months, although the results are visible within weeks with proper aftercare. It usually takes between three and six months to heal fully. While some bruising and swelling are noticeable after surgery, this improves with enough rest, minimal physical activities, ice packs, and pain medication.
The surgeon will schedule follow-up appointments, recommend a good skincare regimen, and urge the patient to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a nutritional diet and regular hydration.
Once fully recovered, patients notice a rejuvenated, youthful appearance with improved facial contours. Results may last over 10 years, often longer than alternative facelift methods.
