Breast Reduction has always been one of the more commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. In addition, women undergoing breast reduction consistently report among the highest levels of patient satisfaction. Women with disproportionately large breasts (macromastia) experience both physical and psychological symptoms.
What are the physical and psychological symptoms?
Physical symptoms Commonly associated with macromastia include skin rashes and neck, back and shoulder pain. Commonly associated psychological symptoms include poor body image, low self-esteem, and a lack of confidence in social interactions. In adult women, improvement in the physical symptoms following breast reduction surgery has been well documented. In recent years, long term improvement in the psychological symptoms has been confirmed as well.
Duke University Research
A recently published study from Duke University specifically analyzed the long-term benefits of breast reduction surgery among adolescent and young adult women. All patients were under 25 years old with an average age of 21. The median follow-up was more than 20 years. The study concluded that these young women experienced significantly higher breast related quality of life compared with similar patients who did not undergo surgery, which was sustained for decades after their procedure. Young women who are troubled by disproportionately large breast size may find relief by undergoing breast reduction surgery.
