Liposuction can be a very effective and safe procedure for most people. Liposuction is an outpatient surgical procedure that helps to remove stubborn fat from an area of the body, typically the belly and thighs but also other areas where, even with regular exercise, you cannot get rid of small pockets of fat.
How Is Liposuction Performed?
There are several types of liposuction procedures available, both surgical and nonsurgical. During your consultation at Miami Plastic Surgeons, we will help you determine which type of liposuction is right for you. Suction-assisted liposuction is the traditional method. A cannula is inserted through a small incision made through the skin. Fat is removed by vacuum pressure. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) is a liposuction technique which uses ultrasound waves to break up and liquefy fat cells. The fat is then suctioned out.
UAL is used where denser fat is present, or when larger volumes are removed.
Are There Non-Surgical Liposuction Alternatives?
For patients who are seeking fat removal without surgery, the FDA-approved CoolSculpting® procedure may be an option. In this procedure, a device is used to freeze an area of fat cells, which then die and are excreted by the body. There is no downtime or recovery time after treatment, but it may take multiple sessions to achieve the desired results.
Are Liposuction Results Permanent?
Liposuction, whether surgical or CoolSculpting®, results in the permanent removal of fat cells. However, to maintain your new shape, you will still need to have a balanced diet and exercise, because liposuction does not prevent you from gaining weight. This is why liposuction is recommended for patients who already are of average weight, with healthy, elastic skin who maintain a reasonable diet and exercise frequently but find that they still cannot get rid of fat in their midsection, liposuction from Florida based Miami Plastic Surgery may be an option.
