Motiva Breast Implants: A Step Above the Rest
Motiva® is a brand of silicone gel-filled breast implants that stands out for its advanced design and innovative technology. These implants were first introduced in 2004 and quickly became popular around the world. By 2010, Motiva implants received CE marking, which is similar to FDA approval in Europe, and they are now available in over 80 countries.
They’re not quite on the market in the US as of yet, though. As Dr. Max Polo, a highly respected, board-certified plastic surgeon with over 20 years of experience in breast and body contouring procedures, explains, ”Motiva breast implants are still waiting for FDA approval in the United States. They have been undergoing extensive clinical trials since 2018. Right now, only patients in these trials can choose Motiva implants for their breast augmentation or reconstruction, but we do expect to see Motiva approved for use in the US very soon.”
These next-generation implants come with several improvements that enhance both safety and appearance:
- Nanosurface technology in Motiva implants helps the body accept the implant better, reducing inflammation and complications.
- Motiva implants have a stronger, single-piece outer shell, making them more durable and less likely to rupture.
- The shell has a new barrier to prevent silicone leaks.
- Motiva implants can include a microchip for easy scanning and verification of implant details.
Motiva Implants Vs. Traditional Implants
Traditional breast implants come in one of two varieties: smooth or textured. Smooth implants are often chosen for their natural feel and ease of placement, but can shift out of place over time, leading to an uneven appearance.
“There’s also a higher risk of developing complications with smooth implants,” Dr. Polo explains, “Things like capsular contracture (scar tissue forms tightly around the implant) can be very uncomfortable and distortion of the breast shape. It may even require additional surgery to correct. Of course, a skilled surgeon will do everything they can to help mitigate those risks, but it’s important to be aware and informed before you get any cosmetic surgery.”
Textured implants were developed to address some of these concerns. The textured surface is designed to help the implant stay in place by encouraging tissue to grow into the rougher surface, reducing the likelihood of movement and capsular contracture. However, they can sometimes cause more inflammation than smooth implants, which may lead to discomfort or other complications. In very rare cases, textured implants have been linked to serious health issues, such as a specific type of lymphoma known as Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).
Putting Your Safety First
The FDA has said that current silicone gel-filled breast implants are generally safe, but they do come with some risks. Early data suggests that Motiva breast implants might have fewer complications while still giving great results. However, we need more long-term data before making any final judgments. If Motiva implants prove to be safer and get FDA approval, they may come with a higher price tag, leaving you to decide if the benefits are worth the extra cost.
For those thinking about silicone gel-filled breast implants, there are already excellent options available, and Motiva implants could offer even better choices in the future. However, the most important decision you’ll make isn’t which implant to choose, but which surgeon to trust.
“The success of your procedure depends more on the surgeon’s skill, how well they match the implant to your body, and how they care for you afterward than on the implant brand itself. A good surgeon will help you choose the implant that’s right for you, ensuring results that meet your expectations.”
